And then there was Three Years…..
Every day for six years, I used to pray that I would find my way back to the boy I loved.
Until finally, one day, I did.
But that’s the funny thing about life. Nothing good ever lasts, not for me, anyway. You think you’re the one with the power, at least I did, but then I got careless. One tiny mistake, and now I am powerless to stop what comes next.
People think money equals power, but all the money in my bank account, the dirty notes laundered clean that my father left for me, are useless.
Money does not equal power. Power is held by the one with the knife in his hand, tracing shallow cuts into your skin.
Power is held by the one who owns you.
I had power once.
Now, I have nothing.
This whole novella was completely mind-bending. I knew things were about to get very bad with the way things ended in Four Score, but I never could have imagined the events of this book. Dornan proves once again just how sick and twisted he really is as he attempts to break Juliette. As Juliette suffers Dornan’s wrath, Lili shows us her strength, resolve and absolute refusal to be broken, endearing her to me even more. Lili sparked a fire in me as I grew to hate Dornan with every fiber of my being, a feeling that only intensified with each twisted act. I was rooting for Dornan’s death every step of the way.
Lili really solidified my connection to Juliette in this one. What she went through during this book is unthinkable and I couldn’t help but want to reach in and save her myself. I found myself terrified, disgusted, and downright enraged on her behalf. Amidst the torture and cruelty, Lili infuses sparks of light into the story with new characters who will soon play a role in deciding Juliette’s fate. Even though we don’t see much of Jase in this book, we learn a lot about his own experiences with his father in the months after Juliette’s world was shattered. This insight creates a deeper understanding of his character that had me eager to rescue him as well.
Lili paints her scenes flawlessly. She had me firmly planted next to Juliette with every sight, smell, sound, texture and shift in the environment she described. I was completely transported into this novella. She has crafted this plot extremely carefully, expertly weaving the truths with the lies, the past with the present. Just as I begin to think I have things figured out, Lili throws me for a loop, forcing me to surrender to her ingenious storyline. I never expected the revelations at the end of this book and I’m pretty sure I’m in physical pain waiting on the next book and trying to guess where this incredibly serial will go from here.
