Until We Fly

Ex-Army Ranger, Brand Killien, has always been good.

A good friend, a good soldier, a good everything. .

The problem is, good hasn’t gotten him anything but a crushed heart.

So after licking his wounds, he decides to move on.  And moving on doesn’t include being good anymore.

Bad sounds so much better.

Jaded and detached, Brand is determined to never open himself up to anyone again.  It’s not worth the pain.  Instead, he becomes closed, hardened, aloof.

But then he’s called back home for a family emergency… a family that he is estranged from.  A family that he put out of his mind a long time ago for very good reasons…reasons that involve secrets and pain.  Reasons he tried hard to forget.

But home is where the heart is, and it just might be where Brand finds his again.

Why?  Because home is where Nora Greene is.  A fiery, red-headed spitfire, Nora is a thing from his past.  A beautiful, feisty thing.  When Brand left, she was away at boarding school.

But she’s back now.

And she wants Brand, scars and all.

I’ve been waiting forever to hear Brand’s story. Since we first met him in If You Leave I knew there was something special about him, something indefinable that pulled me in. I was hooked and I had to know what made him who he is. When I read Before We Fall and saw Brand’s heart get flattened by Jacey I knew I needed him to get his own happily ever after. So I waited (not so patiently) for Until We Fly. Courtney Cole did not disappoint. Brand and Nora’s story is above and beyond what I could have hoped for him. Nora is exactly the kind of woman that Brand deserves.

“He’s gentle, yet firm, strong, yet careful. He’s a beautiful contradiction… and exactly what I need.”

One of the things I’ve noticed about Courtney Cole’s writing is that when she creates a character, she goes all in. Both Brand and Nora had depth, history, vulnerabilities, personality, and aspirations. They felt real and natural and like someone I might actually meet in my everyday life. I adore that about Courtney’s books. Being able to connect and relate to the characters pulls me in and holds me hostage in the story until the end. Nora and Brand don’t have an immediate fiery connection between them when they meet. The fire between them builds for a short while until the attraction they feel becomes so apparent that it cannot be denied. I enjoyed watching them slowly let their guard down around each other until Nora finally gave in and laid everything out on the table.

“You’re strong,” she says firmly. “And brave and honorable and good. I’ve never met anyone like you. And I doubt I ever will again.”

Finally seeing Brand’s past is a bit crushing. His story is filled with more sadness and pain than I would have guessed. Nora’s outward appearance is incredibly deceiving because when the truth about her own history comes to light it is much darker than I could have imagined. But in true Courtney Cole fashion, she gives these broken and bruised characters so much strength and the courage to live in spite of what they’ve been through. I adore the overall positive feeling I get from reading this book. Even when things are bad I can sense that bit of hope lurking around the corner. It takes a special talent to convey that in writing, to make people feel that with your words. Courney Cole knows how to take damaged lives and drench them in sunshine while maintaining the realistic and vulnerable nature of the situation.

“You’re flying, Branden. You’re finally flying.”

Once again, the Beautifully Broken series adds another heartfelt, honest, and emotionally relevant book to its lineup with Until We Fly. The natural character development, strong storyline, and emotion-filled moments make this book shine. I fell in love with Brand’s incredible heart and amazing spirit. His story seized a hold of me and took me on an unexpected and beautiful journey. If you love this series and you’ve wanted to know more about Brand you will undoubtedly adore this book. I am delighted to have finally been #BRANDed.

Author Bio

Courtney Cole is a novelist who would eat mythology for breakfast if she could. She has a degree in Business, but has since discovered that corporate America is not nearly as fun to live in as fictional worlds. She loves chocolate and roller coasters and hates waiting and rude people.

Courtney lives in quiet suburbia, close to Lake Michigan, with her real-life Prince Charming, her ornery kids (there is a small chance that they get their orneriness from their mother) and a small domestic zoo.
