Title: Before We Fall
Author: Courtney Cole
Series: Beautifully Broken #3
Release Date: December 3, 2013
Sometimes before we fall . . . we fly.
One dark moment was all it took to turn twenty-four-year-old Dominic Kinkaide’s world black. On the night of his high school graduation, a single incident changed him forever, and he became a hardened man-famous in the eyes of the world, but tortured inside. Now all he cares about is losing himself in the roles that he plays.
At twenty-three years old, Jacey Vincent doesn’t realize how much her father’s indifference has affected her. She is proof that sometimes it isn’t one specific moment that wrecks a person, but an absence of moments. She tries to find acceptance in the arms of men to fill the void-a plan that has worked just fine for her, until she meets Dominic.
When jaded Dominic and strong-willed Jacey are thrown together, the combination of his secrets and her issues turns their attraction into the perfect storm. It could change their lives for good-if it doesn’t tear them both apart
I didn’t think it was possible for Courtney Cole to tell a more heart wrenching story than Gabe’s in If You Leave. But then I met Dominic. Dominic is a Hollywood actor, fighting the limelight in order to lead an isolated life. Dominic has been wrecked by tragedy. He keeps his secrets tightly concealed and distances himself from everyone in order to avoid the pain of facing his past. Jacey is trying to recover from the last bad boy she fell for, the one that turned her world upside down. She knows the last thing she needs is to fall for another broken soul and risk the life she’s tried so hard to put back together. Before We Fall is Dominic and Jacey’s story.
“Don’t love me,” he says simply. “Or I’ll break you. I won’t want to, but it will happen.”
The characters in this story were fabulously different from the characters in the previous Beautifully Broken series books. We still get a glimpse of Madison and Gabe but this time we’re thrown into the world of fame, fast cars and faster women. Dominic’s brothers are rockstars and they live the stereotype perfectly. I am already incredibly intrigued and definitely thirsty for their story. We also get a little more Brand in this one and if anything, it just made me that more excited about his book. We get to see a softer side to Jacey, a side that cares and worries and needs to fix things. A vulnerable and insecure girl desperate for validation. Dominic is not like any of the guys we’ve met so far. He is dark and damaged and gritty and raw. His past has led him to believe that he deserves loneliness and pain while his A-list status has made him an expert at burying his demons out of sight but never off his mind.
“I must definitely be a masochist, because I know beyond any shadow of a doubt that tonight will annihilate me. Yet I follow him willingly into the house. Into hell. Or Eden.”
I never saw this story coming. From the moment Jacey and Dominic met it was one wild, out-of-control, unapologetically insane ride. The chemistry between these two was radioactive and constantly threatening to turn everything they know to dust. Dominic’s past, his tragic story, is a mystery for most of the book. We get pieces of the puzzle as we move through the story but the big picture of what he’s running from doesn’t come into focus until the last part of the book. When it does. Holy. Shit. I was blindsided by the truth behind his pain and the unexpected twist in the story. Courtney Cole brilliantly constructed this storyline to reveal just enough while saving the big bang for the end.
“He’s sad and broken and amazing and sexy and haunted. He’s all of those things and I love him.”
Before We Fall is probably the most tragic of the Beautifully Broken series stories so far, but it just made me love it that much more. The powerful emotions that run off each page had my heart and head all twisted up and kept me completely invested in Jacey and Dominic’s story. I couldn’t put this book down. I had to know what hid behind Dominic’s pain and if he’d ever let Jacey in. Courtney Cole did a brilliant job, once again with her feisty characters and devastatingly beautiful story. This was a moving addition to the series and I hope we see more of Jacey and Dominic in the future.
