Series – The Bet, #3
Boring Beth Lynn has always lived up to her nickname… until she wakes up in a hotel bed next to a sexy as sin state senator she re-connected with at a wedding the previous night.
The biggest problem? She can’t seem to remember anything about the night before except for crying into a box of cookies, and she’s pretty sure Grandma Nadine slipped something in her drink. And what should have been a one night stand turns into a six day adventure when Grandma whisks them off to Hawaii to save them from the ensuing media firestorm.
Jace isn’t looking for commitment — he believes he made that clear when he left the wedding with Beth. Then again, he can’t remember much of anything other than the way her skin felt beneath his hands. Now he’s stuck with her at some lame couple’s retreat and trying his hardest to fight the attraction only a woman like Beth could invoke.
He doesn’t think it can get any worse.
But one spider attack… A donkey ride from hell… And an unfortunate episode with Viagra tea — and there’s one thing Jace knows for sure: He should never have agreed to Grandma Nadine’s suggestion in the first place.
Because if this isn’t paradise, and it isn’t a vacation — that only leaves one option.
But to make it through alive… they might lose their hearts in the process.
“I’m not saying I didn’t get a little help.” Grandma shrugged. “What woman doesn’t want to look twenty years younger? These old things still have some perk left.” She pointed to herself and winked.
“I’m sorry, but what does this have to do with our national security?” The FBI agent took off his glasses and groaned.
“Oh, it doesn’t. I was just bored with all the silly questions about kidnapping and death. So depressing! You wouldn’t happen to have any wine, now would you?”
Well, Grandma Nadine is at it again! This time she has her sights set on Beth and Jace. The Dare picks up right where The Wager left off, with Jace and Beth having a little too much fun (aided and encouraged by grandma of course) at Travis and Kacey’s wedding reception. The minute the book begins we are already in the middle of Grandma Nadine’s latest and greatest crazy matchmaking scheme. Along for the ride this time are Travis, Kacey, Jake and Char insuring that the chaos never stops. Nothing beats seeing the whole family together in the middle of Grandma’s plotting.
“But we’re the FBI.”
“And I’m Grandma.” She winked. “It’s best to know your place in the world…”
With each book in The Bet series the scheming has become more convoluted, infinitely more crazy and if possible, even more hysterical. I am in awe of Rachel Van Dyken’s mind and the complex narratives she crafts. She uses the tiniest details to link her story back to the beginning of the book and back to the other books, creating a flawless sense of continuity in her characters and in the storyline. She continues to floor me with her sarcasm, wit, unending sexual innuendos, sweet gestures, romantic moments, and heart wrenching words.
“What good is the fairytale, if, in the end, the girl’s so broken she can’t even finish the damn story?”
Beth might be my favorite female of the bunch so far. Yes, she is an insecure hot mess (let’s face it, we’ve all been there), but she is also a smart, self-proclaimed science nerd who is totally unafraid to be herself, even if that means referring to Jace as an Avenger’s character or talking about relationships in terms of chemical bonding. Her quirky personality and the way she wears her heart on her sleeve endeared her to me immediately. And Jace, well Jace has taken over Jake’s role in the group with his stubborn determination to remain commitment free and focus on his personal success. So needless to say, watching him fall and fall hard was priceless.
“I’d probably retell the story to my cats once I got home and fully gave up on the male species as a whole.”
As always the emotional component to this story stole my breath away the minute the truth about their past connection was revealed. Jace and Beth kept breaking my heart and piecing it back together every time they fought their feelings in hopes of protecting themselves or protecting one another. Of course it wouldn’t be The Bet series without a ton of mischief, some ridiculously awkward situations and Grandma popping up at every turn, making sure the emotional ride is expertly balanced with incredible humor. Rachel Van Dyken has done it again. Jace and Beth are another fantastic couple you can’t help but root for. With each book, I’ve fallen harder for this crazy family and I guarantee you will too.
Rachel Van Dyken hit another grand slam with The Dare! When I first came across The Bet and The Wager, the series was quickly added to my favorites. Although the wait has been agonizing, I’m glad to say that the series is still on the top of my list, and was worth every single moment of waiting. Beth and Jace were even more stubborn than previous couples, Grandma Nadine was even trickier, and we even met some other conniving manipulators.
There’s something about reading The Dare that made me squeal, laugh out loud, and just feel warm and fuzzy in my heart. I love that this series has the same premise of each book, but it unravels differently in every single one. I adore the twisting of a first love to becoming more. I think we all secretly wish and hope for a piece of the love that is described in these books. Getting the updates on previous couples was incredibly satisfying, but this story really was mainly about Jace & Beth; two complete opposites who have to prove something to themselves rather than anyone else. It was just a feel good romance that I know I’ll be revisiting, especially when I need a good laugh! Not to mention, like I’ve said, Grandma Nadine is the star of the show. She meddles her way in and has such out of the world antics that you can’t help but love the woman! I definitely recommend this to believers in true love, and anyone who simply needs a laugh out loud romance!
