Author: M.J. Fields
Series: Men of Steel #1
I sat in my room at our family’s tattoo parlor, Forever Steel staring at the phone. I hadn’t stopped looking at the picture of this crazy, quirky, insanely beautiful blonde haired blue eyed siren that invaded the Jersey Shore a month ago.
Carly Smythe was not my type at all. She was a twenty year old student at Stanford University in California, smart as hell, and funny. The shit kicker was she was so awkwardly unaware of what any man with pulse could see, and that was that she was a damn heartbreaker with a body that made me hard the very first time I saw her.
She made me crazy, she snuck out to see me, and then avoided any sexual advances I made on her, until I finally kissed her, and I didn’t wait for an invitation either: I took those pouty little lips and made them mine.
Carly was also an avid reader of those books, you know “Mommy Porn.” So my game had to be stepped up. Who the hell am I kidding? She could see through my game immediately, and it didn’t have the same effect it did on every other girl I hooked up with. And she didn’t go running for the hills, either. I fell hard… and fast.
Abe (her cousin) knew all the shit that had gone down in my life for the past five and a half years and in order to make this work, which I wanted it to… I needed to set the record straight, put it all on the line, give her the 411, and let her decide if after everything, she still wanted to give it up to a guy like me. A tattooed, pierced, f-up, with a past that was sure to send any girl into a tail spin. She was not any girl, she was…different.
Somehow I managed to completely miss the M.J. Fields boat. I happened to be at an author takeover event when along came a few teasers from the Men of Steel series. I was intrigued by the hot guys and the sassy women, so I went ahead and one-clicked the first book in the series. I am SO glad I did. Jase did not disappoint and it had me one-clicking the rest of the series right away! Jase and Carly meet while Carly is visiting her dad and brother in Jersey. Her cousin Abe takes her to a party, where she quickly finds herself in the path of one Jase Steel. Jase likes to have fun, casual, no attachments, but he knows there is something different about Carly from the start. They begin to spend time together and their connection sparked right off the page, threatening to ignite everything around them.
“Falling asleep, still falling for you.”
Probably my favorite thing about this book is the humor. This book is just so damn funny. The sarcasm, wit and outright awkward situations are so seamlessly woven into the characters that you can’t help but feel like you just spent the day laughing with a best friend. So much goes oh so wrong for these two. Jase has a crazy ex-girlfriend. Carly fails miserably at getting ready for their first date. Jase meets Carly’s mom in a less than ideal situation. Through it all they laugh at themselves and shake it off and that made them absolutely relatable. A couple of times I found myself shaking my head and thinking, yep, that would totally happen to me.
“When are you going to let me kiss you?”
“This is our first fake date Jase. My God, what kind of girl do you think I am?”
Things aren’t always all laughs and sunshine for Carly and Jase. They deal with a lot and man, could I feel my heart aching for them. Carly goes to school on the other side of the country and Jase gets unexpected news that turns his world upside and completely shifts the direction of his life. They are forced to find out who they truly are and exactly what they are capable of handling. They are called to question whether their love can survive life’s curve balls and unexpected losses to find a way to be together.
“You are my everything, the driving force behind all the shit you see around here now. I want to be the man who you look at and know will catch you when you fall, and not just literally. I want to be your shoulder, and your rock. The center of your world and the one who surrounds it. I want to fucking own you and for you to allow it, because God knows you already own me.”
I love a book that can make me feel a multitude of emotions over the course of the story. Jase had me laughing one minute and heartbroken the next. I became a part of Jase and Carly’s emotional journey and I fell in love with their story. They were the epitome of “twisted steel made beautiful” and I was hopelessly captivated until the very end. This was one of those books that had me staying up to finish the whole thing in one sitting, because I simply couldn’t let go of their story until I knew how it played out. I am so glad I stumbled upon M.J. Fields and the Men of Steel series. I can’t wait to read more about the ridiculous (in all the best ways) Steel brothers!
