Carly Jo Simon believed that Colton Weston was her future, but he shattered her heart into tiny pieces. Just like any little girl would, she assumed her daddy would always be by her side. Unbelievably, he turned his back on her when she needed him most, leaving her with no one in her life to turn to for support.
Without options, Carly runs away from the only home she’s ever known, leaving behind her heartache and the betrayal of the two men she loved most.
Seven years later, Carly reluctantly returns to Kentucky. Her daddy is dying of cancer and Colton is nothing like the boy she once loved and left. After her daddy passes, Carly must uproot her life in South Carolina and take control of Simon Coal Company, where she has no choice but face the pain of her past.
Can Carly keep her secrets buried deep beneath the black Kentucky coal and her heart safe from the fiery Colton Weston?
Wow…just wow. While reading this book, I often found myself asking if this was really Silla Webb’s debut novel. It was VERY good and immersed me in a culture/community I knew virtually nothing about. I love learning new things and experiencing something different, so that was an automatic plus in my book. However, having said that, it did take me a few chapters to get used to the dialect. I’m grateful that Webb warned us before the start of the book that the language used would be different so the grammar junkie in me wouldn’t cringe whenever something seemed wrong.
The characters themselves were wonderful. Carly Jo was so incredibly strong-willed and determined. She freed herself and then came back to a situation where the world was thrust upon her shoulders and she still never really faltered. I love that through her inner monologues we got to really see her weaknesses though. It made you realize just how much she wanted to find the balance in everything. I also enjoyed Colton – as hard-headed and determined as he was! He acted with such conviction and it was truly heartwarming. However, he did get a bit overbearing alpha for me at times. I like the dominant male, but sometimes he just seemed to overdo it a tad. Together, they just seemed perfect! I kept yelling at them whenever they did something that would set their relationship backwards. As a reader, I definitely felt invested in these characters!
There were so many twists and turns with this plot, but definitely in a good way. It seemed like Carly Jo and Colton would get over a hill and then be faced with a mountain. It kept the story going and the reader immersed though. I sort of guessed the ending about 85% of the way through which left me feeling a tad bit deflated, but I would still read the book over again. The events leading up to it weren’t predictable in the least! Overall, I had an extremely hard time putting this one down. From the moment the prologue ended, I had to figure out where the rest of the story was going! DISCLAIMER – there is a pretty big cliffhanger at the end! I will definitely be biting my nails waiting for the next one to see how everything plays out!
