Synopsis

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover, a passionate tale of friendship, betrayal, and romance.

At twenty-two years old, Sydney has a great life: She’s in college, working a steady job, in love with her wonderful boyfriend, Hunter, and rooming with her best friend, Tori. But everything changes when she discovers Hunter’s cheating on her–and she is left trying to decide what to do next.

Sydney becomes captivated by Ridge, her mysterious neighbor. She can’t take her eyes off him or stop listening to the passionate way he plays his guitar every evening out on his balcony. And there’s something about Sydney that Ridge can’t ignore, either. When their inevitable encounter happens, they soon find themselves needing each other in more ways than one…

Includes an original soundtrack created by musician Griffin Peterson.

Review

This is one of those books that completely rips open your soul and gives you the experience of a lifetime. Colleen Hoover hit a grand slam with this idea of combining a musical soundtrack with the words she creates. I honestly don’t know that there are any words I could use to accurately describe this story because it is so much more than that – but I will try my hardest.

“There isn’t a doubt in my mind that we could be perfect for each other’s life, Sydney. It’s our lives that aren’t perfect for us.”

I loved the way Colleen Hoover wrote these characters. There was just something so pure and heartwarming about them from the very first moment we met them. Within each chapter, we get to see both Sydney and Ridge’s point of views, and I was so incredibly grateful for that. I loved being inside both of their heads because of the miscommunication or misunderstandings that sometimes presented themselves. It allowed the reader to get a more global picture of every detail. Furthermore, without being physically intimate, Colleen wrote these scenes that were so incredibly erotic and romantic and passionate. You can’t help but get sucked into every word; every touch; every single thought.

“To me, lyrics are harder to write when you have to invent the feelings behind them. That’s when lyrics take a lot of thought, when they aren’t genuine.”

And of course – the music! I am a person that is constantly listening to music. I live my life through lyrics because I honestly think that there is a song to describe any situation you are going through. Music is a healing therapy for me. That being said, this book above anything else is a total experience. You can read the book without listening to the songs, and you can listen to the lyrics without reading the book. However, when they are combined – it is pure magic! Griffin Peterson did such an amazing job putting the feelings of these characters into songs. The story of Ridge and Sydney takes lyrics (that I’ve been listening to since the soundtrack was released) and gives them meaning. On the other hand, the lyrics bring to life every single nuance, emotion, and action these characters go through. They intensify these moments and elevate them to a whole new level. It makes it feel as though these aren’t just characters in a book; they are old friends retelling their story to you. It honestly gave me goosebumps on more than one occasion! If you haven’t given Griffin Peterson a listen, you are definitely missing out!

“Maybe I’m not the hero to her I’ve always tried so hard to be, because right now, I feel as if she doesn’t even need a hero. Why would she? She has someone so much stronger I’ll ever be for her. She has herself.”

Overall, there is certainly heartbreak and an emotional ride. It is a love story that is heightened with the addition of the music. It is intense, beautiful, powerful, and breathtaking. There are so many adjectives I could use to describe this book, but there is no way that words could do it justice. As you learn though, words are not always needed. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone and everyone. Most of all though, I’d say to just experience it and really FEEL the book…it’s a journey you’ll treasure. This is undoubtedly my new favorite Colleen Hoover book!
